Meadowbank Bowling Club greenkeeper Ivan Wilson has been hard at work keeping the lawns in tip-top condition for The Clubs New Zealand 2015 National Men’s Outdoor Bowls tournament.
Wilson, who has been a member at the Meadowbank Club since 1988, has been working on the lawns from 6am each day to ensure the surfaces are competition-ready.
“I’ve been working on the greens from the first thing in the morning – until about half past eight, from about quarter past six, it was cold, freezing, blowing like billyo,” he said.
Mr Wilson said Tuesday night’s dismal weather made his work more difficult yesterday morning.
“We’ve got a roller, it was cut last night [Tuesday], this number one green, and was rolled this morning. It takes about half an hour then it’s marked out with the chalks,” he said.
“It was flooded yesterday [Tuesday]; it was underwater. We cleared it off with squidges but the other green soaked it up. It’s been busy. I was here for 13 hours yesterday [Tuesday], doing jobs around the place.”
The bowls stalwart will have one more early start. The competition ends tomorrow.
