Oamaru Boxing Club-Waitaki Warrior’s Zac Korkou and Haimona Huria have continued to impress at South Island tournaments in the last two weeks.

Korkou and Huria competed against experienced opponents at the Cashmere Club Boxing Tournament in Christchurch 10 days ago. Korkou fought Wiremu Herbert and lost by unanimous decision but the welterweight came out strong, using his power to deploy heavy shots.

Herbert used his experience and stayed away from the 25-year-old, fighting from the outside to come away with the win.

Huria took on former heavyweight Sunny Teki-Clarke and lost by a razor-thin split decision. The 22-year-old used speed, power and combinations in a determined performance and was unlucky not to be awarded the decision.

Haimona then travelled south to compete in Gore last Saturday, taking on Rhiane Bishop and winning by unanimous decision.

Coach Joe Cropley praised both of his fighters for their dedication.

“He [Huria] showed improvement as the rounds went on and was looking very sharp in the final round.”

“Both Zac and Haimona impress the crowds whenever they fight as they’re always giving a 100% and bring plenty of entertainment, whether they win or lose they always fight hard.”
