Indoor soccer in good hands

Indoor Soccer Waitaki will be co-ordinated by Matt Haywood next season, after more than 20 years under the tutelage of local football stalwarts Steve Wicks and Keith Roach.

Wicks said he and Roach would still play, despite stepping down from adjudicating, and was pleased local indoor football would be in capable hands.

“Keith and I were going to end running indoor a year or two ago, but were unable at the time to find someone to take over,” he said.

“We didn’t like letting players down, so continued to run it in the meantime. We have enjoyed providing this service to the community but finally had come to the point of calling it a day.

“(We) posted a notice at indoor with our intentions, so when we were approached by Matt Haywood and a few others showing interest in taking over, we were very pleased knowing that the competition would be going to very capable hands.

“Our intention is to continue to play in the competition but we would like to take this opportunity to wish Matt and the group all the best for the future, and we look forward to seeing them on the court for the new season.”

Haywood praised the work of his predecessors and insisted proceedings would continue in the same vein.

“It’s just going to carry on the same way. They’ve done such a good job,” he said.

“We can’t take on any more numbers, so we’ve just got to keep it up.

“I am (looking forward to January). It’s good fun and not too stressful and there’s plenty of help.”

The season will conclude on December 2 before reconvening on January 27 through to March with a men’s and two mixed divisions.
