Mixed success has been the story of North Otago cricketers at the national age group tournaments being held in Wellington and Lincoln.
Nathan Smith, Brady Kingan and Llew Johnson are all part of the Otago under-17 team playing in Wellington, while Nathan’s older brother Jeremy is at the under-19 tournament in Lincoln.
So far Jeremy has been part of a solitary win, with his Otago side getting a first innings win over Northern Districts in their first match of the tournament.
Jeremy has had a good tournament to date scoring 21 against Central, before notching 51 in Tuesday’s match against Auckland. He has been used sparingly with the ball so far.
There are still matches for the under-19s against Wellington, 50-over match and a 20/20 fixture.
Meanwhile at the under-17 tournament, Smith, Kingan and Johnson have all chipped in at various times.
Nathan has managed starts in all the games to date with 17 not out against the New Zealand invitational XI and 21 not out against Wellington, as well as 15 against Canterbury and 14 against Auckland, while also top scoring with 30 against Central Districts.
Llew Johnson has notched the highest score of the North Otago players at the under-17 tournament with a smashing 46 not out against Canterbury. He also scored a rapid fire 37 of just 17 deliveries against the NZXI.
Kingan made 15 against Canterbury, before contributing 22 in his side’s match against Auckland.
Nathan Smith has been a stand out with the ball for the side, taking eight wickets so far, including 3-27 against the NZXI and 3-35 against Canterbury.
The Smith brothers and Brady Kingan could be in action this weekend for North Otago in their must win Hawke Cup elimination match against Mid Canterbury.
