The North Otago Year 6, 7 and 8 representative netball teams performed well over the weekend at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin.

The Year 6 group team won their grade in emphatic style, remaining undefeated with wins over Upper Clutha, Dunedin, Menzies and South Otago.

Coach Leigh Petrie praised the players’ efforts and credited the team for how they conducted themselves on and off the court.

“To win the 6B grade was an impressive result for the North Otago team in their first ever tournament,” she said.

“There were some great displays of netball skill and determination and the large group of supporting family and friends were impressed with how well they worked on and off the court as a team.”

The Year 7 group mustered a second place finish with wins over Upper Clutha B and Taieri, but narrowly lost out to Dunedin and Upper Clutha.

Coach Mel Lewis said she was pleased with the players’ performances and would now look ahead to this weekend’s action in Geraldine.

“The Year 7 team pulled together some great pieces of play during the tournament,” she said.

“Down to nine players for the day, all girls got game time and coped really well with all changes made.

“All girls showed moments of greatness and we are looking forward to putting it all together for (the) Aitken Shield in Geraldine next weekend.”

The Year 8 team finished in fourth place two wins and two losses, toppling Taieri and Upper Clutha in the opening two fixtures before falling to tightly-contested losses to Menzies and Taieri in their play-off encounters.

“The day started well for the Year 8 North Otago rep team with two good wins against the Taieri and Upper Clutha teams, seeing us go to the top of our pool for the crossover games,” said Year 8 coach Jane Paton.

“The girls had confidence going into thethird and fourth playoff. The first half went well and we were up 7-2 at half-time, however with strategic changes to their line-up, Taieri forced errors and we ultimately went down 12-9 at the final whistle.”

Paton praised Kate Paton and Tayla McGregor-Hofman’s defensive efforts, Molly Hurst and Olivia Paton’s combination in the shooting circle and Brylee More and Taylor Pickworth’s hard work in mid-court.
