The North Otago senior netball team will lock horns with old foes Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury for the Hanan Shield at the Taward St courts on Saturday.
The North Otago team is in fine form following an impressive display at the Aitken Shield earlier this month, posting a 33-12 win over Waimate and a 29-17 victory against Geraldine, but coach Abbey McKenzie is expecting two testing encounters.
“The team has been training the last five weeks in build up to the Hanan Shield. We also had the Aitken shield tournament earlier in year to use as preparation,” she said.
“On past year’s records, Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury have extremely strong teams. They obviously have a bigger area to pick their squads but we are confident we can give them a good challenge.”
McKenzie believes senior netball is in good health following an impressive trials period and hopes the development continues.
“This is the first year in some time that the North Otago Senior team has had trials due to the number of girls available, which is a big step in improving North Otago representative netball,” she said.
“I have had a training squad of 12 and some of those are new to this level, so it has been great to develop those players.”
McKenzie said the players had been concentrating on becoming familiar with one another’s style of play in recent training sessions.
North Otago and South Canterbury will take to the court first at 10am before South and Mid Canterbury face off at noon. North Otago and Mid Canterbury will bring proceedings to an end at 2pm.
