Two Oamaru golfers have been selected to play at representative level.
Michael Ormandy and Gary Creedy have been named in the Otago interprovincial golf squads for this weekend’s Triangular tournament in Cromwell, featuring Aorangi and Southland.
Ormandy, who has been selected in the Otago senior team for the first time, said he was really looking forward to it.
“It will be good. I’m really happy I was selected and feel my golf has been strong lately.”
He was last selected for an Otago golf team back when he was 17.
“It’s been about 10 years since I was last selected. It’s a long time between drinks, but I’m looking forward to the higher level of golf.”
The senior men’s team consists of 10 players, with Ormandy playing at number 10, and it will be trimmed to eight for the South Island interprovincials at Russley Golf Club in Christchurch. It is likely Ormandy will be part of this squad. The squad will then be trimmed to six for the New Zealand interprovincials in Hamilton.
“I’m hoping for a couple of strong showings so I can show them my potential.”
Meanwhile, Creedy has been named captain of the masters team to contest the national interprovincials in Waitangi in early November.
“It’s a bit of a shock really. I did not expect to be named captain of the team, which is awesome.”
While Creedy hasn’t played as much golf as in previous seasons, due to him taking the winter off, he feels he is in the best form he has been in for some time.
“I’m playing the best I have for three or four years and I’ve been playing less than I usually do.”
Creedy was looking forward to the challenge of captaining the side.
“It’ll be great fun. I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” he said.
Both men play off a 1 handicap.
Creedy is a member of the North Otago Golf Club, while Ormandy is affiliated with the St Clair Golf Club in Dunedin, but plays at the North Otago Golf Club when in Oamaru.
Making the Otago sides are the pair’s highlights so far.
