The Oamaru Club is hosting the Clubs New Zealand 2015 National Men’s Outdoor Bowls Tournament, which begins today and concludes on Friday.
Registrations were held at the Oamaru Club yesterday with more than 100 teams, including 11 local sides, expected to compete as players arrive from across the North and South Islands to pit their skills against rivals from near and far.
Matches will be played at Otematata, Meadowbank, Phoenix, Awamoa, Maheno and Hampden bowling clubs.
The winners of the competition’s main event will take the coveted Moase Cup home, while the Jack Travis Cup will be awarded to the runners up of the main event.
The Jim Dempsey trophy and Kelly Plate will also be played for.
Tournament secretary Murray Lamb said the competition would bring a boost to the local economy, with plenty of competitors and supporters travelling to North Otago.
“There’ll be 102 teams of four, stretching from Auckland to Wanaka,” he said.
“It’ll be a very big boost for the local economy.
“Three years ago we had 128 teams, it was unbelievable what it brings, you virtually couldn’t get a bed at a motel here. All the evening shops will get something, and the clubs themselves will make money, so it’s a huge money-spinner for the district.”
