Week one of the Oamaru Multisport Club’s triathlon and duathlon series proved a resounding success, with more than 40 participating at Friendly Bay on Wednesday evening.
For the first time, the events incorporated both the North Otago Primary School and the North Otago Secondary School Championships.
River Cunningham (17.19secs), of Oamaru Intermediate School, was fastest in the Off the Couch triathlon, which consists of a 100m sea swim, a 4km bike ride and a 0.7km run or walk.
Fellow pupil Ryan Smit (18.02secs) was the best of the Off the Couch duathletes. The duathlon is a 1.8km run or walk a 4km cycle followed by a 0.7km run or walk.
The Weekend Warrior races provided more of a challenge, with a 300m sea swim, 12.5km bike ride and a 2.5km run in its triathlon and a 1.8km run, a 12.5km cycle and a 2.5 km run in the duathlon.
Waitaki Boys’ High School’s Callum Ruddenklau (42.15secs) won the Weekend Warriors triathlon section and Taz Selfe (49.14secs), of OIS, was fastest in the duathlon.
Event organiser Diane Talanoa said she was happy with diversity of participants.
“It was great to see so many people there. Right across the age and ability range, including students, families, through to veterans.
“Over 40 people took part.”
The races continue on February 11 and 18.
