Oamaru Jockey Club committee member John Fleming is hoping for back-to-back wins at the Oamaru Punter of the Year competition on Sunday.
The Punter of the Year competition has been running on Oamaru Cup Day for a few years, but it was only last year when the prize money was increased to $2000.
Mr Fleming was part of last year’s victorious punting team that won the $2000 and he said he hoped to repeat the win.
“Hopefully I’m on the winning end of the punting competition again. It would be quite nice to win it two years in a row.”
So far, there are 12 teams entered in the competition and while the jockey club was happy with that number, Mr Fleming would love to see more.
“We are happy with 12 teams. It’s a good number, but we also welcome any more teams that are willing to take part. We can cater for 20 teams.”
The meet on Sunday is the Oamaru Jockey Club’s annual winter meeing and Mr Fleming was confident it would be a good day out.
“It will be great fun. There is an extra race scheduled, which we are excited about, because we get a small return, so more races is better.”
Gallop South general manager Malcolm Little said there were some quality fields taking part on the day.
“The Oamaru Cup and the Waitaki River Trophy are two of the more exciting races and they have strong fields along with a $25,000 at stake in both of the races.”
With the weekend weather expected to be fine, Mr Little is hoping people will turn out in numbers to support the day.
The first of the nine races gets under way at 11:50am and the final race is scheduled for 4.13pm.
