Former St Kevin’s College student Johannah Kearney has claimed a bronze medal at the World Rowing U23 Championships as part of the New Zealand Womens Four.

The New Zealand Womens Four entered the competition outsiders, with Australia, Ireland, Russia and the Netherlands expected to be the main medal contenders.

It was a tight race in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria, with Australia leading the full distance, but placings constantly changed for the entire 2000m.

New Zealand fought to stay in the pack and finished with the bronze medal, only 0.05s behind second-placed Russia, but were a comfortable 4.5s ahead of Ireland, which finished in fourth place.
