The Tour of Southland continued on Friday with the 160km race held in damp and cool conditions.
A small group of seven riders broke away, including last year’s tour winner Michael Torkler and strong riders Dan Barry and Josh Page, however, the Peleton again dictated the terms and swallowed up the riders with 2km to go.
It was a mass sprint to the end with no accidents. James Oram held a 34-second lead to put him in a strong position for the final stages on Saturday.
As expected, Oram finished the final stage from Wington to Invercargill to claim his first Tour of Southland victory.
Oram first claimed the tour’s yellow jersey on Tuesday’s climb of Bluff Hill and never looked like relinquishing it throughout the final five days of the lung-busting event.
Local cyclist Tim Rush finished in 29th position overall.
