Sisters Bridget and Lucy Crabbe are the only North Otago representatives named in the Hannan Shield squad to compete in a tournament in September.
The Waitaki Girls’ High School duo, along with some players from St Kevin’s College, trialled for the team, with the sisters the only locals gaining selection to the squad.
The Hannan Shield side comprises of players from North Otago, South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury and will play the likes of Otago, Canterbury Southland and Tasman.
Bridget, who has been selected as a winger, said she was happy to have made the side.
“I’m pretty pleased to have made it. It’s cool that Lucy has as well.”
After picking up the game of rugby just two years ago, Bridget said she was pleased with her progression.
“I’m happy with where I’m at and I love all aspects of the game.”
Sister Lucy, who has been playing rugby for three years, said it was good to have made the team and she was looking forward to the upcoming tournament.
“It’s pretty good. We trialled well and are happy we made it,” she said.
“It should be a good tournament and hopefully we play some strong teams.”
The pair said they were hoping to take their game as far as possible with aspirations of one day pulling on the black jersey.
The tournament is being held in Timaru from Sunday, September 28, to Tuesday, September 30.
The team has a warm-up clash in Oamaru on September 21 against Otago at the Whitestone Contracting Stadium.
