SKC to lock horns with Burnside

St Kevin’s College will entertain Burnside High School at Murray Field tomorrow in the South Island Coeducational Schools Rugby Final following a much improved campaign.

SKC downed local rivals Waitaki Boys’ High School 38-13 in their last outing to win the Highlanders First XV competition bowl final and notch a hat-rick of victories over Waitaki this season, but unlike WBHS, Burnside are an unknown quantity.

“We don’t really know anything about Burnside, we are really going in blind. We know they will be a good side, they are the second best team in Christchurch so they are going to be a handful,” said St Kevin’s coach Justin Fowler.

Fowler his players are confident following some fine displays this season but will be without Connor Newlands after the pacey winger picked up a shoulder injury against Waitaki.

“We are feeling confident and we need to going into a game like this,” he said.

“There is no point showing up if you don’t think you can win. We have played some attractive attacking rugby over the last two weeks and we want to put Burnside’s defence under some pressure.”

Fowler said he will be looking to make a quick assessment of Burnside before committing to a particular style of play.

“Tactically we have a few options on how we can play,” he said.

“We will start with a particular option and we will endeavour to make a quick assessment of the opposition and then look to change the focus of our attack if we think a change will work better.”

Should St Kevin’s win they will be Rotorua-bound next week to compete in the National Coeducational Top Four competition.
