St Kevin’s College squash player Thomas Pickles has been invited to Sydney by Jason McLauchlan to train and play ahead of the Next Generation Open at the Lane Cove Squash Club.
McLauchlan, previously from North Otago, is prominent on the squash circuit in Sydney as a coach at the North Shore Lane Cove Squash Club and the Director in charge of Events and Tournaments for New South Wales Squash.
Pickles was invited to travel to Sydney after McLauchlan returned to compete in the recent Oamaru Open and was impressed by the 16-year-old’s ability.
The Year-11 student will leave on November 25 and receive daily training sessions before competing in the tournament on November 29 and 30.
Pickles said he is excited at prospect of additional training and intends to take as much as possible from the experience.
” I was pretty excited, I took up the offer pretty quickly,” he said.
“I just want to get the experience and develop some new skills.”
