Construction of the Waimate Event Centre is progressing well, according to a report from the company undertaking the project.
Thompson Construction and Engineering has been tasked with building the $3.8 million event centre, which was originally christened the Waimate District Community Complex before a name change was approved by the Waimate District Council.
The report, presented to the council’s Environmental Services and Finance Committee, said the main structure of stage one _ including two sports courts, ablutions, a function room, offices, a meeting room and the main entrance area _ was 80% complete, including the roof and a concrete floor, which would be overlaid with a timber floor.
A mid-level floor, which will include a viewing area and add extra space above the ground floor office had been built.
“All the contractors have been working well on-site, with everything coming together as planned,” the report said.
Last week, aluminium joinery was measured and painters started work on the exterior. Six more carpenters are expected to join the team next week to lay insulation.
Over the next four weeks, the walls of the function centre will be raised, as will the main gable ends of the stadium, while the remainder of stage one _ pouring floors and roofing work, will be completed.
Stage two of the project _ demolishing the existing court area, building a fitness centre and ablutions block and improving the existing squash club social area, had gained full consent.
Meanwhile, $450,000 from the Lottery Grants Board to help fund the $3.8 million price tag of the centre is expected to be received by council this month.
Another payment of $50,000 will not able to be applied for until the project is completed.
As well as the Lottery Grants Board grant, Alpine Energy donated $250,000 to the project, while Waimate Health Development contributed $125,000 and the Waimate Basketball Association $7500.
Waimate residents had to raise $950,000 to ensure the project could go ahead and that target was reached several months ago.
It is expected the facility will be complete in December.
