Tainui falls short against Wakanui

Tainui tried hard but lamented some frittered opportunities as it slipped to a third loss in four games in the South Canterbury premier men’s competition at the weekend.

Goals to the two Nicks, Dalziel and MacDonald, could not prevent a 3-2 loss to Wakanui in Timaru on Saturday.

“It was just one of those games,” Tainui player-coach Jared Ovens said.

“We both play a similar style of hockey, but they just took their chances and we missed a couple.

“It was a lot better than we have been playing. So we’re heading in the right direction.”

Wakanui led 2-1 at halftime and was up 3-1 with five minutes to play.

MacDonald scored to give Tainui a sniff, and the Oamaru club fought hard to grab an equaliser.

“We had all the possession and we were attacking hard, but we just couldn’t break through their defence,” Ovens said.

Paul Alden produced a solid performance at the back for Tainui, while the Dalziel brothers, Nick and Josh, shone in the middle.

Tainui plays Northern Hearts in Timaru this weekend.

The first clash between the sides earlier this season resulted in Tainui’s only win, but form might favour the home side.

“Hearts beat Cambridge at the weekend, so they’re starting to get on a roll,” Ovens said.

“I think all five teams in this competition are very even. It’s just about who turns up on the day.

“We’ve had a few of our regular players missing, but hopefully everybody will be there next week.”
