Thanks to a Northern Hearts victory, Tainui locked away the round robin trophy for the first time in more than 20 years – despite being beaten 2-1 by Wakanui Blue in the final round of the South Canterbury Men’s Hockey division 1 section.
Northern Hearts tipped over Wakanui Black meaning the Oamaru-based Tainui remained at the top of the table.
Tainui captain Jared Ovens said it was a fantastic achievement for the side to finish top of the table.
