The Portside Punch Charity boxing event is fundraising for a purpose-built Hospice House in North Otago. This week, the Oamaru Mail is previewing a Portside Punch bout each day, ahead of the event on Saturday. Fight nine of the evening will see ‘Mighty’ Mike Mavor take on Gary ‘The Night Mayor’ Kircher.

Mavor was born and raised in Oamaru and is employed by Parkside Quarries. His sporting career mainly involved rugby, where he played 200 premier games for Valley and more than 100 first class games for North Otago before retiring in 2010. The opportunity for a new challenge, as well as being involved in a worthwhile community fundraising effort, is what persuaded Mavor to get involved in the Portside Punch. The 39-year-old has enjoyed meeting and working with a new group of people in a sport that has put him completely out of his comfort zone.

Sponsor: Cucina 1871
A well-known figure in the North Otago community through business and numerous community roles, more recently Kircher was elected mayor of the Waitaki District. While the training has been challenging, ‘The Night Mayor’ has enjoyed it all, particularly the camaraderie that has come with the regular training sessions. Although fitness and the personal challenge of boxing were motivations, Kircher’s main reason for being involved with the Portside Punch was the cause. He has recently had two major influences in his life die from cancer, both of whom could have benefited from having a Hospice available in Oamaru.
