Teams confirmed for Sevens

Five teams have confirmed their involvement for this year’s Maheno Sevens competition on February 21, and three more are expected to announce their involvement in coming days.

This year’s competition is being organised by the Maheno Home and School committee and is a fundraiser for the school.

Alhambra-Union, Valley, Maheno and Kaikorai will return to the competition for a second year, while Pirates will make their first appearance at the event.

Last year’s champions Taieri and Kurow are expected to confirm their involvement shortly, while Otago Boys’ High School may be the first school side to compete, although rugby master Brian Ashwin was unable to confirm the Highlanders First XV winners’ involvement yesterday.

Committee member Jo Hay said the event would be family-orientated with a designated area for children that would include face-painting and a bouncy castle.

Local primary schools have also been involved in a colouring competition, of which the winner will be announced on the day of the tournament.

The “Dash for Cash” race will return, with the fastest player from each side hoping to snare $100, while a tug-of-war will be held before the final.

“It’s completely a family event. It will start at 10am and we’re hoping to finish at 3.40pm. Bring your families to enjoy the day and have lots of fun,” Hay said.

The tournament will be held at Maheno Domain.
