The South Island Junior Grass Tennis Open welcomed 46 entries from Christchurch, Southland, Otago, Queenstown and Dunedin over the weekend.

Play continued long into Saturday evening, with the threat of rain on Sunday. Overall, 84 matches were completed, with more than 1200 games played.

North Otago Tennis administrator Denise More said the tournament was a success and long overdue.

“After many years of not having a Junior Open in North Otago, we were thrilled to be able to have one again,” she said.

“A great day was had by all and the feedback form the other regions was great. Many juniors had never played on grass before, so it was a challenge for them, but one they all enjoyed.

“With the introduction of a new tournament planning system to North Otago Tennis, we managed to get through 84 matches of tennis on the Saturday – around 1200 games of tennis. The last game finished at 8.45pm. The system enabled smooth running, with limited down time. We were stoked with it.”
