Waitaki Boys’ High School took 11 students to compete at the Otago Southland Secondary Schools Triathlon in Cromwell on Thursday.
The Waitaki group did well to cope with the draining heat, along with the 280 athletes competing from all over Otago and Southland.
Callum Ruddenklau stood out for the locals, notching a time of 54.13 minutes to take out second place in the Senior Boys’ Individual event.
Not to be outdone, Oscar Pedersen (swim), Jesse Young (bike) and Caleb Roberts (run) produced sterling performances to pick up second place in the boys’ team race, with a time of 46.58 minutes.
The rest of the WBHS contingent gave it their all, with Scott Clark, Cameron Paisley and Riku Koyama finishing in eighth spot in the Senior Teams section followed by Jared Brenssell, Josh Caldwell and Jake Gawn in thirteenth place, while Tyler Cunningham came twelfth in a highly competitive Junior Boys’ individual section.
Sports coordinator Paula Symes praised the athletes’ efforts on a day that did not disappoint.
“Awesome spot, fantastic weather, brilliant group of students and some fabulous results,” she said.
