Two finals from three to Oamaru

The Clubs New Zealand 2015 National Men’s Outdoor Bowls tournament, hosted by the Oamaru Club, proved a resounding success last week as players from across the country converged on the town.

Despite some strong competition, it was the Oamaru teams’ dazzling displays that offered the competition’s highlights with three local sides featuring in all three finals.

The coveted Moase Cup was won by local players Andrew Kelly, Patrick Kelly, Bruce Kelly and Merve Roper, who toppled Papanui Outdoor Bowling Club.

Fellow Oamaruvians Peter Bell, Hugh Catto, Darrell Whitburn and Dave Smillie lost out in the Jim Dempsey Trophy final to Mike Gray, Les Dempster-Rivett, Barry Wilcox and Tony Hart of the Hamilton Working Men’s Club.

To make it two from three final wins Oamaru’s Gordon Brown, Trevor Williams, John Smith and Joe Gordon grasped the Kelly Plate after also downing Papanui OutDoor Bowling Club.

Oamaru Club bowls section committee member Trevor Robertson said the event was a resounding success.

“It was a tremendous success. We’re not sure if there’s ever been a team from one club in each final. It was a tremendous success and everyone I’ve spoken to has been happy with how it went,” he said.

Robertson thanked those that offered their time to assist in the hosting of the competition.

“I’d also like to say thanks from the committee to all the clubs, the ladies for the meals, the greenkeeper, bar staff and all the volunteers and to the guys who filled in at short notice because without them, there would be no tournament.”
