The North Otago team performed well at the South Island under-16 rugby tournament in Christchurch last weekend.
The Old Golds locked horns with Otago Country in their opening clash, producing a fine performance to notch a tightly contested 34-31 victory.
Buller were up next in what proved to be another enthralling encounter as North Otago took out a 24-23 win in dismal conditions.
Fixtures were disrupted on day three after the Canterbury Metro invitational team pulled out, meaning North Otago faced a well rested Otago Country side for a second time, falling to a 30-8 loss.
North Otago Rugby Development Officer Jason Forrest said he was pleased with the team’s attitude and performance throughout the competition.
“All boys punched well above their weight and played some great rugby over the three days,” he said.
“Some standouts in the forwards were Josh Hayward, Kafa Katoa, Maka Mafale’o and Sammi Havea, in the backs Keiran McClea, Tarn Crow and Levi Emery.
“These were a great bunch of boys with a lot of talent which I’m sure we will see coming through in the respective First XVs next season.”
