Union fall to second loss

Week three of the Oamaru Liquorland Borton Cup saw Oamaru/ St Kevin’s entertain Union and Albion travel to Waikouaiti to take on Eastern while the points were shared between Waitaki Boys’ High School and Valley with players from both sides attending the funeral of Maheno player Jed Kennedy.

Oamaru/St Kevin’s recorded their first victory of the Borton Cup season with a 35 run win over Union at St Kevin’s College.

Oamaru won the toss and opted to bat, in what turned out to be a fine decision by captain Matt Murphy.

An early wicket to Dan Conlan had Oamaru/St Kevin’s in early trouble with the bat.

Batting has been the Choccos’ Achilles heel over the last couple of weeks, but the home team came right to make 203 all out over the 50 overs.

Contributions came throughout the innings, but Jordan Bartlett’s 41, 22 from Regan George and 21 from both Brady Kingan and Brodie Flannery were the standouts.

Union’s best bowlers were Michael Ormandy with 3/55, Paul Johnston 2/24 and Dan Conlan, who claimed 2/37.

In the field Oamaru started positively with the ball, restricting Union to 28 for 3, however a fantastic 80 run partnership between Duncan Drew who made 34, and Johnston (39) had Union back in front.

Oamaru/St Kevin’s Ed Hall then nicked out key batsmen Duncan Drew and the game turned.

The Choccos then gained some momentum and wrapped up the match, with Brayden Lindsay taking 6/35 while Hall (1/28) and Ben Cant (0/15) off 10 overs turned the match with their spells.

In the other round three encounter, Albion notched a 6 wicket win over Eastern.

Jeff Grubb (36), Ole McLelland (28 not out) and Michael Dodd (26) where the highest contributors with the bat for Eastern, while the standout with the bat for Albion was Ammer Mirza, who posted 82 not out.

Ricky Whyte and Ian Cooney were chief destroyers with the ball for Albion with 3/26 and 3/18.

Next weekend will see Valley lock horns with Albion in Weston, Union take on Waitaki Boys’ and Eastern entertain Oamaru/St Kevin’s.
