Waitaki bowlers qualify for nationals

The two Waitaki schools were represented well at the Southern Regional Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls National Qualifying Tournament at the Taieri Bowling Club in Mosgiel on Sunday.

The dynamic Waitaki Boys’ duo of Samuel Wilson and Damien Kitto made short work of their opposition, taking wins over St Kevin’s College 20-4 and Logan Park High School 13 -6 to win the zone six championship.

The WBHS pairing will now head to Auckland for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in December.

Waitaki Boys’ sports coordinator praised the efforts of the boys and of coach Graham Sangster, and wished them well for the upcoming nationals.

“Waitaki Boys’ are very proud of Damien and Samuel’s achievements with bowls. The pair train very hard, enjoy the game and always represent the school well,” she said.

“Graham is a great coach and we appreciate all the time and effort he has put into these boys. We wish them all the best in their build-up to nationals.”

Waitaki Girls’ had three students competing but the duo of Amy Ballantyne and Courtney Milligan were the standouts, winning the girls’ division and also securing a place at the national competition.

Sangster said he was pleased with the students’ attitude and is now looking ahead to the national event, where he expects strong competition.

“They’re all dedicated and keen to learn. We’ll be practising every Wednesday until the nationals to get them up to scratch,” he said.
