Waitaki duo selected for youth squad

Waitaki Boys’ High School students Brad Gibb and Zac Omre received notification of their selection to the New Zealand Youth Development Squad for croquet yesterday.

The duo produced fine performances at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Croquet Championship in April and are two of only 15 students from throughout the country to have been chosen for the squad.

Gibb and Omre will attend the 2014 CNZ Youth Development Squad coaching event in Dannevirke at the Rangatira Croquet Club on December 18-19 and RP Malletts Under-21 Golf Croquet Singles Championships at the conclusion of the coaching days on December 20-21.

This singles competition is run in conjunction with the Under-21 Development Squad event and will provide the players with an excellent opportunity to put their learned skills into practice while playing alongside the under-21 members who are preparing for the World Golf Croquet Singles Championship.

The event will be coached by Greg Bryant, CNZ sport development officer.

Bryant is the current Association Croquet NZ Open and World Teams champion and will aim to improve the players’ single ball techniques, tactics and goal-setting.

Waitaki Boys’ sports co-ordinator Paula Symes said the school was proud of the boys’ achievements and thanked local coach Brian Monckton for his guidance.

“Waitaki Boys’ are very proud of Brad and Zac’s achievements in croquet,” she said.

“To have two boys from Waitaki selected for the squad is huge. A massive thank you must go to Brian Monckton for the coaching he has given the boys and to the Awamoa Croquet Club for their support of secondary school croquet.”
