Waitaki Girls’ High win Aoraki title

The Waitaki Girls’ High School First VII won the Aoraki Netball Championships for the first time since 1998 at the Southern Trust Events Centre in Timaru on Sunday.

Waitaki were too good for Craighead Diocesan School in their opening clash, with a 22-17 win, before toppling Geraldine High School 20-18.

The black and reds then put Ashburton College to the sword for a 20-18 result to secure a place in the final and a 33-10 victory over Roncalli.

Waitaki Girls’ sports coordinator Jan Meikle praised the side’s hard work and determination.

“We are very proud of the team’s achievement on Sunday,” she said.

“They played with a lot of determination and this win is a reward for all the hard work that the girls and their coach Georgie Salter are putting in on the build-up to SISS Tournament week.”

St Kevin’s College Snr B also performed well, finishing second in the B-Grade competition with wins over Mt Hutt, Timaru Girls’ High School, Waitaki Girls’ High School and Menzies College before losing out in the final to Roncalli 17-11.
