WBHS and SKC shooters on target

The Waitaki Boys’ High School and St Kevin’s College trap shooters were on target again last weekend at shoots in Wanaka and Alexandra.

The Waitaki Boys’  team of Tim Craig, Harry Simpson, Daniel Paisley, Angus Trimble and Jack Simpson took out the top prize in the Team’s Event on Saturday in Wanaka.

Jessica Fraser continued her fine form to win HOA (High Over All) in the Girls’ Skeet before Harry Davis won the Single Rise Senior Division and Jake Taylor finished best of the Junior Division.

Harry Simpson and Angus Trimble placed in second and third respectively in the Junior Division Points Score, Trimble’s sharp shooting continued to collect the HOA for Single Barrel and Junior HOA for the day, while Lewis Mulligan finished second in the Single Barrel Junior Division.

The shooters then competed in Alexandra on Sunday, where the local contingent’s impressive form continued with the Waitaki team of Craig, Simpson, Paisley, Trimble and Simpson winning the Taieri Shield for the third successive year.

Georgia Blair managed a first placing in the Girls’ Skeet followed by Jessica Fraser in second place, the St Kevin’s duo swapped places in the Single Rise with Fraser edging out her classmate to gold while Blair took second. Fraser went on to capture first in the Girls’ Points Score and Blair collected third in the Single Barrel competition.

WBHS captain Tim Craig was the best of the boys in the Skeet section with classmate Jack Simpson collecting third place following a shoot-off.

The tussle for first place in the Boys’ Point Score event was an all-Waitaki affair with Simpson narrowly defeating Craig after another shoot-off while Angus Trimble placed third in the Single Rise and Single Barrel.

Following the weekend’s competition Tim Craig was selected to the Otago Skeet team that triumphed 64-57 over Southland while Jess Fraser, Harry Simpson, Jack Simpson and Angus Trimble were named in the Otago DTL (Down The Line) team that fell to a slender 110-111 loss to Southland.

Coach James Robertson said the shooters’ individual performances were pleasing and have rapidly improved.

“Jess (Fraser) being included in the open team is quite an achievement, as it’s usually all boys,” he said.

“They’ve followed on from their good form at the Aoraki Secondary Schools competition and it’s all good preparation for the nationals in Christchurch next month.

“I’m very pleased, it’s a young team, we had a small slip up in Dunedin but now they’re back to winning consistently, the individual shooters have excelled in their disciplines, the guys have really stepped up.”
