After winning the Aoraki Secondary Schools Squash competition, Waitaki Boys’ took the next step up to take on teams from across the South Island at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Competition in Dunedin.
The twelve teams were split by the organisers into A and B grade – this split was based on the current squash grade that the players within the team held.
The Waitaki Boys’ team of 16-year-olds Jonty Naylor and Josh Caldwell and 14-year-old Thomas Hutton picked up gold medals in the B-Grade following some fine performances.
Waitaki Boys’ sports coordinator Paula Symes said the future of Waitaki squash looks bright.
“Squash at Waitaki has really taken a big step forward this year and we are very excited about all the young players we have coming through,” she said.
Coach Andrea Naylor praised the boys’ efforts amongst tough competition.
“They enjoyed the experience and played to the best of their ability,” she said.
“Thomas had an injury and still played well, so he did really well.”
