Wet, nasty conditions wreck most weekend sport

Rain, rain, go away.

Miserable weather ensured most North Otago sportspeople were able to stay in front of the fire last weekend.

Rugby, as it tends to do, ploughed on regardless, but all other codes made the early decision on Saturday that no play was possible.

All netball – oh, for a new indoor stadium – was cancelled.

Premier netball does have a rain day set aside this month so there may be a double round on the weekend of May 26-27.

Oamaru hockey club Tainui was scheduled to head to Timaru to play Temuka on Saturday but the game was cancelled, and will be made up at some stage.

North Otago senior hockey starts this weekend, and intermediate and junior competitions follow next week.

All three Meadowbank football games – men’s division one and two, and women’s – scheduled to be held at the Oamaru Showgrounds were cancelled.

The division one men’s game between Meadowbank and Thistle will become the final game of the season.

Both Meadowbank men’s teams are playing Geraldine in Geraldine this weekend, while the women are at home to Timaru City on Sunday.
