Young basketball players awarded

Two Oamaru basketballers were named winners at the recent Otago Basketball representative awards last week.

St Kevin’s College students Hamish Robertson, 17, and Matt Brien, 14, were awarded most improved and the endeavour award, respectively.

Robertson represented the Otago U19 B squad and Brien played for the U15 A Boys team.

Last year, Brien won the most improved award and said it was always nice to be recognised for the hard work that goes into training and games.

“I like the speed of the game and how it can change real quickly,” he said.

Brien, who’s goal is to play basketball for New Zealand said when it’s basketball season, they train four days a week and play two days a week.

“I didn’t really expect it,” he said.

Both players represent the St Kevin’s College top five team and Robertson is the team’s captain.
