Sport Waitaki is helping foster the fundamental sporting skills of Waitaki’s youngest athletes.
A have-a-go mixed sports programme was held on Wednesday at Wilson Park, where athletes under 5 were given a range of activities to try.
About 50 children took part in the programme, which included cycling, sack races, hurdles, stilt races and balance beams.
Sport Waitaki co-ordinator Pip Sutton said the programme was designed to help develop the important skills of throwing, catching and balancing.
“It’s about finding those skills that start at this age for them and it’s about encouraging upper body strength and balance,” Sutton said.
Groups from various Oamaru early childhood education centres, home care centres and members of the public attended the have-a-go day.
It was a great success and was very well received by the children and their caregivers, she said.
“It’s been a great morning. The weather has really turned it [on]. It’s really cool to see the kids trialling it and giving it a go.”
The events would continue for the next two Wednesdays from 10am to 10.45am. Everybody was welcome.
