The North Otago Cricket Association Primary School’s Festival hosted seven local schools at the Whitestone Contracting Stadium yesterday.
Students from St Joseph’s, Weston, Oamaru North, Maheno, Fenwick, Glenavy and Pembroke schools participated in fine weather and picked up some tips from Otago Volts players Sam Blakely, Tipene Friday and Jacob and Ryan Duffy.
Organiser Ben Cant said the young players showed plenty of ability and enthusiasm.
“It’s Years 4,5 and 6 kids, mixed boys and boys and girls, it’s all about getting involved and playing some cricket,” he said.
“We’ve been going in to the schools, two or three times at each school, targeting this age group and doing some skills work with them, then they come here to play these games and get some prizes at the end of the day.
“It’s about them getting involved, we usually do the whole classes then the schools narrow it down to their eight best kids to come down to this, so these guys are the keen, cream of the crop ones.”
The next festival will take place in Kurow.
