Alps 2 Ocean alternative Cycle trail – `only gets better and better’

The Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail has broken new ground again.
The alternative route for the trail was launched recently by Mackenzie District Mayor Claire Barlow after a group of 15 cyclists rode from Lake Tekapo to Twizel.
Cyclists riding the trail can choose to start at Lake Tekapo, and the route is 54km to Twizel.
The trail counters indicate 300-400 cyclists are using the Lake Tekapo alternative route each month.
“The Lake Tekapo alternative route is a gentle introduction to the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail,” Tourism Waitaki marketing and sales officer Jason Menard said.
“It’s flat and easy to ride, with sweeping views in every direction of the sky-filled expanse of the Mackenzie Basin.
“This route now loops the businesses at Lake Tekapo into the Alps 2 Ocean network, which is great news indeed. The township has so much to offer to tourists. It’s another addition to a trail that only gets better and better.”Mrs Barlow said the completion of the alternative route was “another feather in the cap” for Lake Tekapo.
“I’m pleased to see the closing of the Tekapo Canal Rd to vehicle thoroughfare has been adapted for an even greater purpose which the whole family can safely enjoy,” she said.
New Zealand Cycle Trail manager Evan Freshwater said Alps 2 Ocean was realising its potential as a “premier tourism product”.
