A number of North Otago roading projects been given a high priority in a joint Otago-Southland regional plan to address transport issues.
Environment Southland and the Otago Regional Council have joined forces to prepare the Draft Otago Southland Regional Land Transport Plan 2015-21, which was released on Wednesday.
Previously, regional land transport plans have been done separately for each district.
Each project throughout the two regions has been put into priority bands.
North Otago projects which have been listed in the draft plan as having a high priority include the Hilderthorpe Straight Flood Mitigation (projected to cost $2.24 million), the Maheno Flood Mitigation (estimated at $700,000) and the Waikouaiti Flood Mitigation (expected to cost $1.5 million).
Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss, who is part of the technical advisory group, said local authorities, including the Waitaki District Council, had been working with the New Zealand Transport Agency to prepare the draft plan.
Environment Southland and Southland Regional Transport Committee chairman Ali Timms said while each council was required to produce its own plan under the Land Transport Management Act 2013, both councils saw the opportunity to be more effective by working together.
“The combined approach aims to increase the chances of individual projects getting off the ground and improve our access to funding.”
Otago Regional Transport Committee chairman Cr Trevor Kempton (Otago Regional Council) said projects of significance to both regions would benefit from combined advocacy.
The plan includes all proposed state highway and council projects for Southland and Otago for the next six years and is open for public submission until March 6 at www.orc.govt.nz and www.es.govt.nz.
