Second derailment in a week

North Otago has had its second freight train derailment within a week after an incident in Oamaru yesterday afternoon.

The derailment occurred at the KiwiRail Oamaru freight terminal near Humber St at about 2pm.

A KiwiRail spokesperson said it appeared to be a minor derailment in the freight terminal rather than the mainline, so the only service affected was the one involved in the incident.

“That service will be slightly delayed as a result.”

No wagons had tipped over, but it was understood that the train wheels had slipped off the rail on a couple of wagons, the spokesperson said.

“That sort of thing does sort of happen from time to time,” she said.

The containers on the affected wagons had been moved onto other wagons ready for departure yesterday.

The cause of the incident is still unknown but is being investigated.
