A local church has rallied together and raised a whopping amount of money to help with the Philippine relief effort.
Christian Life Centre Oamaru asked its members to help donate towards the effort and ended up raising $3000, which they presented at their Sunday morning service a week ago.
The money was then sent to their world relief organisation, World Assemblies of God Relief and Development Agency (WAGRA).
Christian Life Centre Oamaru pastor Mike Lind said people had been very generous, especially at this time of year.
“It shows the generosity of people in our district.”
Individuals working together could contribute a lot and even if the money just saved one life, it did help, Mr Lind said.
“We’re trying to get the community back on its feet again.”
They also had a community barbecue last Sunday, which anyone was welcome to attend, he said.
This was the fifth time they had held a barbecue and they usually had a turnout of 300-400, Mr Lind said.
It was a way to give something back to the community, he said.
WAGRA helps with crisis and disaster response, health and community services programmes, development and maintenance programmes and environmental concerns.
