About 700 salmon are being released into a Papakaio pond ahead of the 2013 Take a Kid Fishing event.
Lower Waitaki Irrigation Company’s Chris Dennison said they hoped that by sponsoring the event, they would encourage more young people to fish and enjoy the outdoors.
“The idea is that everybody catches something,” he said.
Mr Dennison said they would be releasing about 700 salmon into the pond, and with the registration number being closed off to 200, there was a high probability of catching a fish.
“Depending on the level of support, this day may become an annual event,” he said.
There are already some trout in the pond, so there will be a variety of fish to hook.
