Three years ago, Richard Whitham knew very little about the Waitaki Community Gardens – now it’s in his blood.

The 21-year-old was first introduced to the gardens when he was signed up with the Salvation Army’s Employment Plus in 2010 and ever since, whether it be volunteer or paid work, he has been involved.

Once his 13-week course ended, he decided to volunteer about eight hours a week, working at the garden.

From there, Mr Whitham received 30 hours a week of paid work at the gardens where he helped Annie Beattie, who was the co-ordinator at the time.
