In March, Gaynor Howison was diagnosed with breast cancer and on September 26, she lost her battle.
Her former workmates at Pulse Business Solutions have been inspired to give back to the Otago Community Hospice for the support and comfort they gave Mrs Howison in her final days by way of a quiz night, and they hope to see the Oamaru community get behind it in support of a great cause.
“I think people feel a bit powerless when a friend or family member is battling against cancer,” Pulse Business Solutions manager Candy Willetts said.
“Just seeing how much the hospice did for Gaynor and her family has been our inspiration to put the quiz night on.
“At the time it wasn’t going to be in Gaynor’s memory, but unfortunately now it is.”
The Otago Community Hospice offers palliative care, support and services for people who are facing life-limiting illnesses.
“It was just a pleasant place for her and her family to be when the end was near,” she said.
“The team wanted to do something for our colleague and this seemed like a great way to show our support.”
Mrs Howison worked at Pulse for three years, and held the position of supervisor before she left.
Donations from 32 local businesses have overwhelmed Pulse staff with their support.
Among the donated prized up for grabs, is a Pandora bracelet from Ballantyes Jewellers, which will be raffled off separately.
“It’s really amazing the amount of businesses who have got involved and are there to support. Now we just need people to put in teams,” she said.
“At the end of the day, everyone has been affected by cancer at some stage and just to know that the Hospice is there if you ever needed it and you’d be comfortable.”
The Oamaru Hospice Butterlies Shop is co-ordinating additional donations to be raffled as prizes.
The quiz is being held on Monday, October 21 at North Star. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Otago Community Hospice. The quiz costs $10 per participant inclusive of a ticket to the grocery raffle being held. Phone 03 976 2060 to register a team or organise any donations.
