Recently released Statistic New Zealand figures, show the Waitaki District population has grown by 3.012 per cent since 2006.

Preliminary census figures released reveal the number of people in the Waitaki District rose by from 20,220 in 2006 to 20,829 in 2013.

The Waimate District also saw a rise in numbers, with a 4.58 per cent increase – from 7,206 in 2006 to 7,536 this year.

Within the Waitaki, numbers in Duntroon, Kurow, Kakanui, Otematata, Oamaru Central and Palmerston declined slightly, while Argowan had the biggest jump, with a 31.737 per cent increase from 2006.

While the Waimate District saw a slight increase in numbers, the population of the town had a 2.116 per cent decrease, with a 9.078 per cent increase in Waihao boosting the overall tally.

The number of people living in New Zealand on census night was 4,242,048, which was 214,101 more than at the last census seven years ago.

“This means that, on average, the population has grown by about 31,000 people per year since the last census in 2006. This was slower growth than between 2001 and 2006, when the population grew by an average of about 58,000 per year,” Government statistician Liz MacPherson said.

“The census counts show that population change has not been uniform across New Zealand. This largely reflects the movement of people within New Zealand as well as the influence of international migration.”

New Zealand gained 7000 people a year from migration between 2006 and 2013 – less than a third of the 23,000 gained per year between 2001 and 2006.

“After Auckland, Nelson was the next-fastest-growing region, followed by Waikato. Southland turned around a declining population, growing by over 2,000 people in the seven years since the last census,” Ms MacPherson said.
