Tuvalu community celebrates independence

The Oamaru Tuvalu community celebrated 35 years of independence over the weekend.

Tuvalu is a Polynesian island nation, comprising eight islands. The residents all speak the one language.

The Tuvalu community’s population in Oamaru is no more than 100, but Mafa Alaloto said it was growing.

She said the oldest member of Oamaru’s Tuvalu community was 64 and the youngest was two.
