Several people are still in hospital following a motor vehicle collision which occurred on Hakataremea Hwy (SH82) south of Waimate on Thursday.
The incident happened at about 3.45pm after a van allegedly rolled and came off the highway near the intersection of SH82 and Waihuna Rd.
St Andrews sole charge Constable Craig Hedges said three of the six injured people were still in hospital, including the driver.
One person is believed to have severe neck injuries, he said.
Police are still waiting on medical records to determine the seriousness of the injuries before laying charges.
Inquiries led police to believe that the driver had been allegedly speaking to another passenger and became distracted, causing the van to leave the road and roll, he said.
The passengers were believed to be tourists from Taiwan and Korea travelling with a global mission group as part of the Presbyterian Church.
They had been on their way from Christchurch to Dunedin, via Oamaru.
No other vehicle was involved in the incident.
