Among North Otago drivers competing in this weekend’s Waimate 50 is Gareth O’Hara who is lining up for the third time in the event.
He will contest the hill climb and street sprint events.
“It’s a good event with an awesome atmosphere and they’ll be a number of high profile names competing,” he said.
“Everyone goes there to win but you’ve got to enjoy it too.”
O’Hara is driving a Nissan Silvia V8 S14 which has been virtually rebuilt ‘with the help of a few mates’ after it rolled six times in the Circle Hill rally sprint in Dunedin recently. He said the car is now ready to go. Most parts he was able to obtain locally, he said, but some motor parts for the Quad Cam Nissan V8 had to be imported from America.
“The car should be very competitive on the street but not quite so competitive on the gravel.”
Last season O’Hara was placed second overall in the Otago Sports Car Club Speed Championships.
