The Chinese market is promising but domestic tourists are still the backbone of the tourism industry in Oamaru and North Otago, the Waitaki District Council was told yesterday.
Tourism Waitaki general manager Jason Gaskill said 80 per cent of tourists who visited the region were from New Zealand.
He was replying to a question from Cr Peter Garvan who enquired regarding the outlook for Chinese visitors to North Otago.
“China is not the biggest, nor the most valuable,” Mr Gaskill said, “but what it offers is mass year-round-volume and they’re consistent.
