Waitaki District councillor Sharyn Price has resigned following a serious medical emergency last January.
Cr Price has made the difficult decision in light of having a brain haemorrhage and feels she can no longer make the kind of commitment she believes is necessary to fully represent her constituents in the Corriedale ward.
“I am disappointed to find myself in a position where I am unable to fully participate as an elected member of the Waitaki District Council but believe this is the right decision for myself and the electorate,” said Mrs Price.
Having only been elected as a new councillor last year, Mrs Price was committed to doing her very best in this role but has had to re-evaluate her priorities.
“I am making a very good recovery and feel fortunate to be here today but I do experience fatigue that compromises my ability to be an effective councillor while still having a life outside Council.”
Mayor Gary Kircher has expressed his sadness at the resignation but is fully supportive of Mrs Price’s decision.
“We are all very saddened that Mrs Price has had to resign but her health is paramount and we all wish her a full recovery,” says Mr Kircher.
“In the short time Mrs Price has been a councillor she has brought some excellent skills to the council.”
“She has been well prepared and able to contribute strongly to debates.”
“She has a strong analytical mind, along with an ability to speak succinctly and her opinion has been valued by her fellow councillors and staff.”
“I also wish to acknowledge the great support that her husband, Julian, has been to her during this time.”
A by-election for the Corriedale ward will be run over the next three months.
