With a “heavy heart”, Helen Algar has withdrawn from the Waitaki mayoral campaign due to health reasons.
Mrs Algar announced yesterday that unexpected health issues caused her to review her activities and reassess her priorities.
“I am hugely disappointed as I was aware of, and grateful for, a good level of support in the community and my campaign was shaping up just the way I wanted it to,” she said.
“This has ultimately been a very difficult decision for me and my family as we were committed to the campaign.”
Mrs Algar said she will remain in her current position as Waitaki District Council community safety and development facilitator.
“I remain dedicated to the Waitaki community and will continue to contribute to and support the community as I always have.” Mrs Algar announced she would be entering in the campaign in March and said she considered herself a strategic thinker who has done the hard yards.
“I wish all those who participate in the upcoming elections all the very best and encourage everyone to have a say by turning out on the day and voting for our community leaders,” she said yesterday.
Mrs Algar’s governance roles include being a member of the executive of the Waitaki Multi Council, a member of Waitaki Road Safe Incorporated, and trustee of Waitaki Community Gardens Trust.
