Thames St ‘needs to be cleaned’

The dirtiness of Thames St again raised its head during a meeting of the Waitaki District Council last week.

Margaret Thorn addressed councillors and said the streets were dirty and the pavement needed to be cleaned and scrubbed.

“Just sweeping is not working,” she said.

Thames St has its kerb swept eight times per month and the paved footpath is cleaned monthly by a mechanical sweeper.

Footpath maintenance includes disposal of litter and debris, manual removal of weeds, monitoring of sumps and grates and the removal of human waste and once a year the pavement is water-blasted.

Council management has previously said the street did receive a low level of service and business owners were able to keep the outside of their premises clean.
