Work on new 8km wastewater and 9km water supply mains linking Oamaru and Kakanui begins this month.
In a report to tomorrow’s Waitaki District Council meeting, water and wastewater manager Martin Pacey said the $890,000 contract would take four months to complete and had been awarded to Downer Ltd.
“The Kakanui water supply is required to be upgraded to meet the drinking water standards for New Zealand and council also needs to change the way treated wastewater effluent from Kakanui is disposed of.”
Mr Pacey said some of the new pipes would be installed through private land.
“Council officers have liaised directly with those affected landowners and secured agreement for the pipe installation. These landowners will be contacted in person again prior to works commencing.”
Meanwhile, the type and location of toilets at Oamaru Harbour will be considered by the council at its meeting tomorrow.
The recommendation to council is that the toilets are located along the southern boundary of the Friendly Bay Playground and that they have the same style and design as those in the Oamaru Public Gardens. The toilets are expected to cost $123,500.
